MY THOUGHTS
Everyone’s been saying how AI is gonna replace editors. But I don’t think that’s really the point.
The big shift is what clients actually want now vs what they used to want.
I previously thought of a video editor as the person that just takes the footage, makes it look nice, and then sends it back. Often competes on technical details or price. Gets frustrated when they see a more low-effort video get more views than the edit they spent a week editing. Doesn’t really ask questions and just gets the video delivered. And that’s the type of editor that is already getting cooked by AI, cheaper labor, or both.
What clients actually want now is someone who understands why a video works, not just how to cut up clips. They want a partner, not a vendor that can just get it done. Someone who genuinely understands their goals and knows how to use content or the power of social media to get them to that desired outcome. This new form of an editor has to care about the outcome, not just the deliverable.
I call this creative vision. It’s not about having good taste or being “artistic.” It’s being practical. It’s watching 40 minutes of raw footage and knowing which 3 minutes actually matter, and WHY. It’s understanding the audience well enough to feel when something is off even if it looks clean visually. It’s knowing what your story is before you even open the timeline. It’s being aware of who the video is for and what the video needs to do. AI can’t do it as well as a human does. At least not yet. And unique human taste is going to be very hard to replicate.
So stop leading with your technical abilities. AI is making everybody more technically capable, so that can’t be your edge anymore. Creative vision and judgement still can be though. Start thinking in terms of results. What actually changed because of your work. How you helped someone actually reach their audience and become an authority in their space. Position yourself as someone who thinks strategically, not just someone who put some clips together, made it look nice, and got millions of views from which none of them even became clients...
The editor who just edits is very easy to replace. But the one who brings this sort of creative vision is an entirely different conversation.
